Perfectly serious question that's been troubling me about the Brexit situation.  How can the border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland be any different than that between the rest of the UK and the rest of the EU?  I can't see it.  Let's look at people but I think the arguments apply equally to goods.  If a person can cross the border from NI to the IR without any kind of passport/visa check then anyone who is in, or can manage to get into, the UK is free to go anywhere in the EU.  Unless perhaps a "hard" border is established between the IR and the other EU states which I can't see happening.  The same is true in the other direction.  Either there are controls at the border or between NI and the rest of the UK and the IR and the rest of the EU.  Am I missing something?

The Republic and the UK have always had a rather strange relationship- there are those in the UK who still don't see Eire as a separate country and those in Eire who see the UK as a bolt hole from human rights abuses.

It's odd.

No, you are pointing out the essential idiocy of Brexit.

There is effectively a hard border for people between Ireland and the rest of the EU (or at least Schengen) states. The Common Travel Area sees to that. Of course, when it comes to EU migration, Ireland and the UK have the same rules currently so movement across that border doesn't really matter but there are plenty of people now who enter one of Iralend or the UK and are simply trusted not to cross the border and there's no real reason why that couldn't continue.

Goods are a different kettle of fish. It's generally easier to check that a person has rights of residence and employment than whether goods are duty paid or otherwise compliant with border laws.
