Campaign for real sandwiches

I went for a long, long bike ride this morning so come lunchtime I was ravenous and there wasn't much to eat around here so I headed off to the St. Lawrence market in search of the legendary veal sandwich. These things are a sight to behold and defy most definitions of sandwich. They take a crusty roll that's maybe eight inches by five inches and split it lengthwise. Into this they put a breaded veal cutlet, several slices of fried eggplant, tomato sauce (the kind one puts on pasta), sauteed mushrooms, sweet peppers and hot peppers. Any sort of side dish would be unthinkable. I can barely eat one of those things and I'm a total pighearty eater. The lemur usually eats half and keeps half for another meal. Not something I'd dare to eat every day but man, are they good.

I am envious, but also feel much empathy for the lemur. Sandwich sounds yummy, even though I can't bring myself to eat veal. Does it grow in boxes in Canada, too?

There are two kinds of veal. The 'white' milk fed stuff from very young animals and much darker meat that comes from somewhat older animals (I imagine this is what the Italians call 'vitello'). The former may well be produced by methods that I would not approve of and I don't buy it. It is three times more expensive than the 'red veal' so I doubt it is used in the veal sandwiches. Indeed the fairly firm texture would suggest not. I do buy the older type of veal. I can't really see that is any different from buying beef.

Oh, I would agree with that. where veal = young bovine not raised in a box with antibiotics, I'm happy to indulge. Of course, I try to buy all organic mean, so if I looked for organic veal, it would probably be just fine.
