Literary Botticelli

I'm home with a nasty cold and need entertainment so what better than a game of Literary Botticelli. The rules are here.

My name begins with D

I am fictional, male, married, not human but could reasonably be considered English and was created before 1800.

It would be a stretch to describe the work I appear in as a novel.

I am not Humpty Dumpty or related to eggs in any way.

In most ways I appear to be human. In one important one I do not.

I do not have a tail.

I am not Dylan or Delnabo.

Clues added

My home also starts with D

I appear in a work that was once immensely popular but probably isn't much read anymore

We have a winner

[livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren correctly deduced that I am the giant Despair from Pilgrim's Progress.

Are you a character in The Pilgrim's Progress?

And the winner is

It's a bit ironic that it was you

I have *read* The Pilgrim's Progress, albeit an abridged children's version. It's probably where my massive aversion to allegorical novels comes from.
