Where the Wilde things are

via [livejournal.com profile] oursin When you see this, quote Oscar Wilde:

Ah! J'ai baisé ta bouche, Iokaanan, J'ai baisé ta bouche.

What do you think your choice says about you?

Well I could just be being mischievous but actually Salomé is my favourite Wilde work and it was written in French. My own copy, a bilingual edition, is one of my most prized books. It's the 1938 LEC edition with the French text illustrated by Derain pochoirs while the English is a reprint of the first English edition with the Beardsley illustrations.

Oh, that sounds fab. I've not read it in French (and suspect I couldn't, now). But I've always thought it amazing drama.

I love the Strauss opera. The ROH production with Maria Ewing is particularly spectacular.

Maria Ewing has made quite a Salome over the years. Rare that an opera singer will disrobe onstage. I remember the shock of that in LA (around 1989 I think) big news, sold many, many tickets. Luckily she can back it up with an amazing singing voice.

Which in most cases is a great mercy. I can think of one or two though that can get naked for me anytime.
