Pet peeve

I hate crossword clues involving or appertaining to vegetation. I hate with a burning passion crossword clues that involve or appertain to stupid Tennysonian synonyms for vegetation.

So with you on the first.

Can't imagine what the second actually is, but somehow I know that I'm with you on that too.

Yep. With you. Is that today's Grauniad?

Be grateful not to be well-acquainted with me and my circle in RL; you'd have been so swamped with concatenated puns that a little thing like that wouldn't make the slightest impact!

Puns I can cope with (so long as they don't contain too much vegetation)

I find it surprising that the categories of crossword clues mentioned are common enough to warrant hatred.

English crossword compilers seem to be obsessed with gardening

[identity profile] frankie-ecap.livejournal.com 2006-02-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that. It's that they are the only clues that require a specialist knowledge that you don't automatically have.

What English cryptic crosswords have in excess is sports references!

[identity profile] chickenfeet2003.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
they rarely seem to extend beyond cricket (OK) and golf (very much not OK)

Your hatred is more erudite than that of most others I know. This is a compliment.

I'd have thought a hatred of crossword clues - that is, all crossword clues - would be sufficient.

I'm very fond of cryptic crosswords. It's sudoku that I don't see the appeal of. I did about half a dozen which was all it took to realise that they can be reduced by brute force.

Funny, I find sudoku addictive, and loathe crosswords. This is partly because I think of answers to the clues which, though they don't fit, are really good answers. And then I decide my answers are better than the actual answers. Clearly, I am not designed for crosswords.
