1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open it to page 161.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

Here goes:

Let us break their bonds asunder

I'll bite, but I'm not passing the meme on. BTW see if you can guess the book. (I have no idea what yours is.)

This, being, according to the utilitarian opinion, the end of human action, is necessarily also the standard of morality; which may accordingly be defined, the rules and precepts for human conduct, by the observance of which an existence such as has been described might be, to the greatest extent possible, secured to all mankind; and not to them only, but, so far as the nature of things admits, to the whole sentient creation.

(This sentence, BTW is literally half the paragraph.)

Guessing wildly, Kant "Critique of Practical Reason"

[identity profile] theomaniac.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, it's actually a selection from J.S. Mill's Utilitarianism. (Kant would have abhored utilitarianism, I believe. I'm not sure if he addressed it in Critique of Practical Reason because I haven't yet read it.)

Heh.

"Stopped with cork".

Yeah, a dictionary...

sigh.

"Inflict Minor Wounds."

I'm a huge nerd.

"It wasn't a whole lot of fun though." from the Civ IV manual.

Hmmm, It is good on the surface. I've only played enough to get my hands wet so I'm looking to play more before I make up my mind. It is definately better than Civ3. The changes they made by building it from scratch hae also meant that there is some real gameplay changes (unhappyness doesnt create revolts, tedious micromanagement has given way to more of the fun stuff) Overall Its pretty good. I only have it cause I picked up a copy on eBay for $20.

"All this analyzing the Deeper Meaning of Life, what had it ever done for anyone?"

"One thing that alarmed us both, though, was the amount of cash that piled up in Susie's strong-box in that first week; it would have given you the frights anywhere, never mind in a town awash with sharpsand slicks who'd have cut a throat for twenty cents."

"The world of Islam was ready and adorned for a festival to celebrate the fall of Jerusalem."

By far the shortest sentence on the page, or even for several pages on either side; this is Imad ad-Din! The 3rd and 4th sentences are much better.

If a complete segmentation is achieved the detected borders segment an image into regions, but if only a partial segmentation results, regions are not defined uniquely and region determination from borders is a very complex task requiring cooperation with higher-level knowledge

This from Flash Hacks by Sham Bhangal is a complete sentence in ActionScript 2.0. I'm very sorry that this was the closest book to me at the time.
