Well judging by the savvy of his "Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy" anything is possible.

Being serious for a moment, I think a lot of the trouble is that the professionals at State who know stuff like where Yurp is and what happened in Hungary in 1956 have been marginalised in favour of a bunch of ideological hacks and military types. It's not the first time it's happened in US foreign policy. The same thing happened in the 1920s and 30s which isn't very reassuring.
