Who says men don't ask for directions?

I was walking up Lower Sherbourne Street this morning when two young guys pulled over and asked me for directions to.... Ottawa. I was surprised and double checked but it was Ottawa they wanted so I directed them appropriately.

For those of you not familiar with Ontario geography this would be roughly equivalent to being stopped on Charing Cross Road and asked directions to Newcastle.

"being stopped on Charing Cross Road and asked directions to Newcastle"

I would say Glasgow with the time and distance involved. Though if you ignore distance, and look at complexity of directions in relaiton to London I would have to say Harrow.

I was once stopped on Dundas St in Edinburgh and asked for directions to Glasgow. All I could think of was "go to the top of the hill and follow the signs..."

That rarely works here as destinations are only signed at major highway intersections (and not always then).

Well, I was surprised that they could have got to where they were without noticing the signposts for Glasgow. And the thought of actually explaining how to negotiate the one way system to get them onto the right road out of town completely floored me.

I dislike driving in towns I don't know. I had to do it a lot in a job I had about ten years ago; surprisingly, I often used to find the specific road I was looking by complete and utter chance.

I couldn't figure out why these guys were where they were either. They were driving north less than a block from the lake.

Well, you walk up towards Centre Point, and about 400 miles later it's right there in front of you...

Yeah! I guess if they had wanted Thunder Bay I could have sent them to Yonge Street and said "just keep following that for about 1000 miles.

Well, I suppose you could have pointed vaguely in the right direction and said "it's thattaway"...

The scary thing is, I have A Theory about what they did wrong.

I bet they messed up at Sphaghetti Junction out by the airport and landed on the QEW thinking it would take them to the Queensway.

I need a Perly's icon...

I was thinking it was more likely that they were coming from somewhere Niagara direction on the QEW/Gardner and had no idea what to do once they hit TO so came off the Expressway to ask for directions.

Yeah, that's entirely possible too.

Well, I do hope they got here and had fun...
