This feels weird

For a very large chunk of my life (roughly age 11 pretty much through my thirties) I wore a tie five or six days per week, most weeks of the year. For the last ten years or so, like most former tie wearers, the number of occasions on which I wear a tie have become less and less frequent. I'm not even sure when I last wore one. But today, I am wearing a tie and it feels very strange indeed. One wonders who came up with the idea in the first place.

I like ties a lot; I think they're one of those rare places in the traditional men's uniform for a tiny piece of luxury, or a flash of unexpected character.

But then again, the poll I'm about to build asks if fuchsia is nelly. YMMV.

I'm sure there is some type of homosocial implication re: the tie thing. In this instance, thankfully, men inflicted the aberration on themselves!

Bow tie or regular?

I decided to go the conservative route today and wore a regular tie.

Arguably they are the last vestige of the Elizabethan ruff, worn by both sexes, transformed into the falling collar with big ties, thence to the stock of cravate and onward to the tie. Men seem to have felt the need to cling to a useless scrap of fabric round the neck for many centuries.

I wear a tie so rarely now that, the last time, I even had a momentary worry about whether my hands would remember what to do! They did, but, as you say, it does feel very strange.
