On the other hand, I do find it disconcerting when Brunnhilde is made to address herself with such spirit to an invisible horse. I'm not sure what the solution is, given that I don't want real horses on stage. Something like the NT's Warhorse horses, which were obviously puppets but apparently managed to move in a spectacularly horsy manner?

The ROH production used a horse skull. Several productions have used video projections.
