chickenfeet: (bear&leela)
[livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta is coming home on the 30th. We have been apart so much this year it has been really hard. With a bit of luck we will have a few months together at least now.

Happy bear dance...

Amongst other things, today is of course the festival of John the Baptist (as opposed to me; who is sort of John the more or less lapsed Anglican). It is a little known fact that besides being the patron saint of Quebec, JtB is also the patron saint of management consultants. Others so honoured include baptism, bird dealers, diocese of Charleston South Carolina, converts, convulsions, convulsive children, cutters, diocese of Dodge City, Kansas, epilepsy, epileptics, farriers, Genoa Italy, hail, hailstorms, Jordan, Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Malta, lambs, Maltese Knights, monastic life, motorways, diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, Penzance, Cornwall, England, diocese of Portland Maine, printers, Quebec, Sassano Italy, diocese of Savannah, Georgia, spasms, tailors, Torino, Italy.

Dodge City seems particularly a propos.

When I first moved to Canada I was amazed that one could buy strawberries all year round. It did not take me long to realise that they tasted slightly less good than the cardboard they were packaged in. Since that epiphany I have gone to some lengths to match my diet to the seasons. Besides tasting much better and costing less there is an essential 'rightness' about following the natural round in at least one aspect of one's life.

One can hardly ignore the seasons here. In NW Europe one, I think, senses the seasons much more in terms of the cycle of solstice to equinox to solstice than as a change in the weather. Certainly for me, winter was more about going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark rather than the switch from cool and rainy to slightly cooler and rainier. Here the change in daylight is much less noticeable but the progression from +30 to -10 with its concomitant changes in mode of transport, wardrobe and much else is inescapable.

So, just as I have no desire to ski on matting in June (a popular pastime with my English relatives) I have no desire to eat tasteless strawberries in January. I shall revel in our short but fabulous soft fruit season when the whole of Niagara seems suffused with the scent of ripe peaches and I shall keep my skis for the days when the snow glistens on the trees and the hairs in one's nose freeze.
