Titus Andronicus
Jul. 31st, 2003 07:12 amA quick review of the Canopy Theatre production of Titus Andronicus at Philosophers Walk at UofT.
It is played pretty much straight by a predominantly young cast though Titus and Tamara were played by more experienced actors. The cuts were judicious and the play moved along at a decent pace. I can't think of anywhere it dragged. The major parts were well played though the diction of some of the minor characters was a touch shaky.
Andre Sills was an excellent Aaron the Moor. On reading the programme one's reaction to the casting of Andre as Aaron (the only 'black' character in the play) was 'bloody typical'. However, he is very well cast and makes the most of a pretty meaty part. He's a very physical actor with terrific stage presence and a good feel for speaking Shakespeare. Definitely one to watch.
Its on again on Friday and again Wednesday and Friday next week so if you are in Tdot, go see it. Where else are you going to see thirteen assorted murders, executions and human sacrifices, three amputations and a rape in two and a half hours?
