Like many people I have long assumed that the World Series of Baseball was yet another example of American arrogance and insularity. I was therefore somewhat heartened to find that it apparently isn't. According to Simon Winchester's Krakatoa (a very good book BTW) the World Series originates in a challenge sponsored by the now defunct New York newspaper The World.

I went to the market this morning with a few ideas about what i might cook tonight or tomorrow. I had it in mind to try a lamb shank dish that I had found an interesting recipe for. Only one of the butchers appeared to have shanks so i enquired after the price. To my surprise they were more expensive than leg. This makes no sense to me. I like shanks but they are half bone and need much long slow cooking to be edible. Leg is pretty much the prime bit when it comes to a lamb roast. So what gives? Tough, fatty, boney bits needing long cooking and TLC are supposed to be the cheap bits and the prime roasting bits are supposed to be more expensive. I suppose in a world where salmon is cheaper than cod, anything is possible.
