The story of a rather odd weekend
Aug. 15th, 2004 05:41 pmYesterday
lemur_catta and I attended a brief Cirque Sublime performance at the Distillery which I quite enjoyed. The evening was spent at the lovely
firefae's birthday party hobnobbing with a thoroughly eclectic bunch, typical of Darcy's soirées. In the absence of a substantive culinary post, I offer the following conversation.
Person Of Armenian Extraction (I didn't catch his name): "In my country there is a fish, which is endangered, but which people catch anyway because it tastes so good".
Me: "What's it called?"
POAE: "It doesn't have an English name but it translates roughly as 'The Prince'"
Me: "A salmon trout like fish from the Caspian traditionally served with a sauce of walnuts and water buffalo cream?"(1)
POAE: "Yes"
We then got on to talking about local Armenian celebrity Isobel Bayrakdarian , who is clearly going to go down in popular culture as the person who sang one song on the Two Towers soundtrack. No doubt Judi Dench will be known to posterity for her role as M.
This morning to Parkdale for brunch with
gregclow and
lilactime. A good choice of location by them, Mitzi's Sister, resulted in a pleasant lunchtime over various eggy and toasty things, very decent coffee and excellent beer.
gregclow and I probably spent too much time talking about work related stuff but there was plenty of beer and film related conversation too. The inhabitants of the quartier performed their parts with just a little too much verismo. Any one of street person collapsed on pavement, old lady with stick knocked off her feet by trained attack dog or torrent of verbal abuse directed at disabled person on scooter for 'speeding' would have been par for the course. All three in one visit was un peu de trop.
1. A good, and apparently not dissimilar dish can be made by serving a cold poached salmon trout with a sauce of finely chopped walnuts and cream into which a little lemon juice and horseradish has been incorporated.
