An odd coincidence
Jan. 13th, 2008 08:20 amRereading At Lady Molly's for the umpteenth time I came across something that I had never noticed before. Mildred Haycock, in complaining about Widmerpool's eating habits, refers to 'banting', which is a word I was unfamiliar with. I conjectured that it might be a synonym for 'diabetic' as that both fit the context and made sense. It turns out though to derive from one William Banting, an enormously fat London coffin maker and undertaker, who in conjuction with William Harvey devised and popularised the first low carb diet. Curiously he seems to have been distantly related to Sir Frederick Banting.
