chickenfeet: (bike)
The western half of Queen's Quay; Toronto's harbourfront boulevard has been under construction for a couple of years or so.  I find it curious that in a city where office blocks, condo towers and whole neighbourhoods get built in 12-18 months anything involving infrastructure and the city takes years.  But that's not the main theme of this post.  I had heard rumours that there was a detour around the construction for cyclists and I was determined to find it.  Actually there isn't.  Like almost everything to do with cycling in Toronto a perfectly sensible idea has been botched into near uselessness in the execution.  There is a detour around the middle bit of the construction.  It's an asphalt path running just south of Lakeshore Boulevard.  It's not in perfect repair but it's usable.  However, finding it from either end requires a miracle involving successfully navigating badly signed devious diversions.  The signage is missing where one needs it most and useless where it does exist.  In one place it points straight into a chainlink fence and one of the few visible signs instructs the rider to make a left turn when the only alternative is to ride straight into the lake.  I spotted two maps of the route.  Both were only visible when travelling eastbound and only if one had already successfully found the detour.  All rather typical of Greater Robfordia really/.
