Turkey?

 Can anyone who understands international relations explain to me why the Western powers are supporting Turkey?  As best I can tell it's an Islamofascist state hellbent on eliminating all political elements within its own borders that don't support the dominant ideology and which is actively supporting Islamist elements in Syria including IS/ISIL/Daesh which we are, apparently, supposed to regard as the worst thing ever.  They now seem to be doing their best to start WW3.  I know Western foreign policy at the moment seems to be determined by the dimmer elements of the Baldrick family but this seems particularly bizarre.
