So Marc Bloch was a better and more penetrative historian but Braudel lived longer and thus has a more substantial body of work. I find it interesting to see how he capitalised on the volume of data not available to earlier historians. Like David Hackett Fischer he made something out of thousands of unwanted PhD theses.
invented traditions:
I continue to be fascinated by all those things that brits hold to be of great antiquity and which are less than 200 years old. The Scots are particularly egregious in this respect, sacrificing a perfectly respectable history for a farrago that would not be out of place in a Mel Gibson movie.

One of my favourite art forms and far too little understood in the English speaking world. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the genre by the late Walter Strachan while still a schoolboy.

I like the traditional music of the British Isles and many other places besides. Despite obvious evolution over time it's a great source of insight into what ordinary people thought and felt and, not least, it's fun to perform.
