From the BBC:

The Queen has lit the first of 1,000 beacons that will form a "chain of light" around Britain to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Beacons were then lit by Prince Charles in Scotland, Princess Anne in Wales, Prince Edward in Northern Ireland and Prince Andrew in Greenwich.

The Queen is in Portsmouth for a dinner in the great cabin of HMS Victory.

Earlier Britain's most senior sailors laid wreaths at St Paul's Cathedral in London and on Lord Nelson's ship.

Buglers played and prayers were said at a sombre ceremony in St Paul's.

A 60-strong Navy band performed during the event.

The victory over Spanish and French fleets is being celebrated throughout Britain and commemorated in Spain.

The poor French seem to be rather left out. Surely we could have invited Jacques Chirac to come and place himself on the beacon of his choice?
