I went for a long, long bike ride this morning so come lunchtime I was ravenous and there wasn't much to eat around here so I headed off to the St. Lawrence market in search of the legendary veal sandwich. These things are a sight to behold and defy most definitions of sandwich. They take a crusty roll that's maybe eight inches by five inches and split it lengthwise. Into this they put a breaded veal cutlet, several slices of fried eggplant, tomato sauce (the kind one puts on pasta), sauteed mushrooms, sweet peppers and hot peppers. Any sort of side dish would be unthinkable. I can barely eat one of those things and I'm a total pighearty eater. The lemur usually eats half and keeps half for another meal. Not something I'd dare to eat every day but man, are they good.

Sounds like a perfect day. It seems almost too early for 'early fall' but given that the whole of August has been pretty wet and cool here it seems that is what we have here too.

In NY I also had to adopt the lemur's practice of eating half and throwing half away (no fridge). My puritanical self hated the waste - but better that for us distaffers than an ever thickening waist!

Those sound phenomenal. And *messy*. But worth it.

I miss you even more than veal sandwiches. At least I always drop a few pounds
when I'm out here.I also had a sushi box from the market last night so I can't complain.I tried to call a moment ago but the phone was being strange. The weather is perfect but I feel a bit sad. I have several books going and one of them is even interesting but none of them have kittens sitting on them.

From that place in the basement you mean? Those are big.

One of those slab-o'-pork sandwiches from the Portuguese place on the main floor is about as much as I can usually handle.

I am envious, but also feel much empathy for the lemur. Sandwich sounds yummy, even though I can't bring myself to eat veal. Does it grow in boxes in Canada, too?

I love the eggplant version (never had the veal). They're fantastic, but I agree - I can only have a half before I'm ready to burst. They're perfect for sharing.
