All hail Surtitles! When I started going to the opera it was either incomprehensible or in English; neither an ideal solution.

You are so right about the essentialness of the total experience. Opera is above all, theatre. Not seeing it is, well, not seeing it.

BTW there's lots of really good Mozart era and earlier opera; Gluck, Handel, Purcell, Monteverdi and so on. Some really good stuff.
