The MetHD production of Rossini's Le Comte Ory has been released on DVD.  It's still hammy but it's still also well sung and very funny and the sound is better than it was in the cinema.  More...

Hey. when was hammy ever wrong in the context of Rossini?

(I have happy memories of a production of the Barber of Seville for schoolchildren which was, I kid you not, el Museo de Jamon. They loved it, and so did I)

It's a fair point. One does not go to Rossini for intellectual depth.
