So apparently Michael Portillo thinks George Orwell fought with the International Brigades. Has he read "Homage to Catalonia"? If you can't tell the difference between the POUM, the CNT, the PCE and the PSOE one really ought to stay out of politics and stick to reading Thomas the Tank Engine to the kiddies.

That said, he has Spanish ancestry hence the name and his family ended up across the divide as so many did.

He's not been active in Tory politics for a long time- he discovered that the real world is a lot more fun.

To be fair to Portillo, Orwell did go out with an international brigade sign up but he fell out with the Stalinist element very rapidly as he was was a Socialist rather than a Communist and ended up fighting with anarchists (POUM as you correctly state) such was the confusion of those times.

I was in fact under the impression that Orwell signed up with the first recruitment table he found on the Ramblas in Barcelona, and they happened to be the POUM but he didn't then know the difference.
