Bike fitting
Aug. 12th, 2018 01:00 pm I had a "bike fitting" yesterday. We couldn't do it when I picked the bike up as we were still waiting for the SPD pedals to come in. So I've now had a couple of weeks with the SPD pedals and decided that was enough sense of how the bike worked for me to go to the next level. I spent about 45 minutes with the fitter (an interesting German with a master's in Ancient History) with the bike on the trainer. He measured various angles and made small adjustments; seat forward maybe 0.5 cm, slight tilt up of the seat front, bars rotated a few degrees towards me. The difference is quite marked. I feel more comfortable, more powerful and safer. I'm better able to move/rotate my upper body so shoulder checks are easier. There's less pressure on the joint between thumb and forefinger.
I tested things out this morning with a ride to High Park which is one of the few places in Toronto that has a reasonably sustained hill climb. It was so easy getting up the hill. I didn't even need a particularly low gear. Riding in traffic felt more secure too as I could check my surroundings much more easily. I was also quite a lot more efficient. He did a good job!
