A new Chancellor
Jul. 5th, 2004 03:10 pmMy alma mater recently solicited my suggestions for a successor to Sir Peter Ustinov as Chancellor. I am not claiming any particular distinction as I imagine the letter went to all of the alumni they could trace. It's an interesting problem though because until very recently Durham was a very small university; graduating maybe 1000 students p.a. when I was there in the 70's, far less if one went back another couple of decades. Now the Chancellor doesn't need to be a Durham graduate but he/she must not be obviously affiliated with another university. There is a fairly strong tradition of the Chancellor coming from the arts; Margot Fonteyn, Peter Ustinov, or the 'great' families of the North East (sundry Greys etc).
I'm having a hard time thinking of good candidates.
