Famous Belgians
Dec. 21st, 2003 10:25 amOK you lot came up with 23 famous Belgians:
Rubens, Jean Claude van Damme, Eddie Merckx, Maurice Maeterlinck, Hugo Claus, Helmut Lotti, Audrey Hepburn, Willem Elsscho, Hieronymus Bosch, Jacques Brel, René Magritte, James Ensor, Hergé, Plastic Bertrand, Chantal Akerman, Kim Clijsters, Adolphe Sax, César Franck, Georges Simenon, Paul Jambers, Liz Clairborne, Jean Luc Dehaene, Justine Henin, Mercator.
It must be said, some of these are really not very famous at at all. Plastic Bertrand? Paul Jambers? Some of the others look like they are well known writers in the Dutch/Flemish speaking world but don't appear to be much read in translation. Fair enough though.
The list of 248 Famous Belgians at www.famousbelgians.net is patently absurd. Hands up anyone who can tell me (without looking him up!) who Joseph Lebeau is or was?

Singalong Messiah
Dec. 21st, 2003 06:41 pmThis afternoon
lemur_catta,
purplesofa and I joined Herr Handel and 2000 others for the annual Singalong Messiah at Massey Hall.
purplesofa had gallantly volunteered to sing tenor with me but, as always, the tenors were outnumbered 20:1 by the massed ranks of sopranos. To make matters worse, we were in a section of the theatre which, while nominally assigned to tenors, had been invaded by all manner of riff-raff with the result that we weren't close to what we really needed; a tenor with a clue. We did OK on the easier choruses I think but we definitely totally lost the thread a few times. Maybe I should practice next time.
