The wisdom of the f-list
Mar. 20th, 2007 08:05 amI've been listening to a very enjoyable, though much abbreviated, BBC Radio dramatisation of The Mahabharata. It has left me wanting more. I now there are several people who will read this who have relevant knowledge and opinions so I thought I would use this channel to ask for recommendations on good English translations. I'm not unfamiliar with reading oral epics in translation. I've read The Iliad and The Odyssey and at leat three different translations of Beowulf. If it helps define the style of translation I find most enjoyable, I would choose Fagles for Homer and Heaney for Beowulf. I know scholars criticise Heaney but I simply find him more enjoyable and I'm looking to read The Mahabharata more for pleasure than for scholarship! I look forward to your suggestions O Mighty F-List.
