Us vs the Army
May. 4th, 2005 06:44 amLast night I dragged myself out to Brampton, despite acute pain in all the diodes down my left side, for the semi-annual XLs vs Chambrays game. The Chambrays are the rugby team of the Canadian Forces Defence College and generally consist of a bunch of very fit and aggressive 30-something Majors who have played little or no rugby leavened with a handful of guys from more traditional rugby countries who are either on the Command and Staff course or on a tour as DS. For example, this year their captain is an English Wing Commander, two or three years ago the job was filled by an Australian Lt. Col. Our team averages 10-15 years older but we have some idea (in theory) about the game.
The game was fairly brutal and once more we had the bare fifteen guys so I was playing flat out for an hour. I don't really like how I play when I'm depressed. There is an essential element of aggressiveness missing from my game. I'm doing stuff, but I'm doing it a fraction slower and less incisively. That said, the run around did make me feel a bit better and there were excellent burgers to be had afterwards.
Two games in three days is pretty tough going though. My ageing body needs more recovery time than that and I am carrying a few niggles and knocks. The most painful is a cleat scrape down the inside of one knee but I've also twisted up a couple of fingers and one or two other minor things.
