What I did in the great blackout
Aug. 15th, 2003 07:13 amPredictably I was sitting here at the computer when the lights went out. At that stage we had no idea that it was anything other than local. A couple of hours later marsha called from California to see if we were OK and to let us know what was happening. Anyhow
lemur_catta decided to go for a walk and see what was happening. I think
lemur_catta had designs on finding a sushi restaurant selling stuff off cheap. Apparently this happened in the wake of the San Francisco earhquake.
The great sushi hunt failed so we headed for C'est What on the theory that C'est What is always pitch black anyway. Sure enough C'est What was open so we had a drink. It was pretty chaotic though because the cash register wasn't working and they had to do everything manually. Shortly after the owner decided enough was enough and shut up shop.
So home we went through the crowds of people gabbing on their cellphones. Had one known this was going to happen it would have been interesting to observe how people in various cities behaved at intersections where the lights were out. Here in Toronto it was very civilized and efficient.
The power appears to have come back on here about 1 am.
