Wales 60 - Canada 3
Jun. 12th, 2005 08:19 amThe scoreline makes it look worse than it was. Sure, it was a second string Welsh outfit with a bunch of top players either with the Lions or injured but the Welsh squad was made up 100% of full time professional rugby players. Canada fielded only seven pros in their twenty two. On a day when the Humidex hit 41C fitness was always going to be key and inevitably the Welsh had a marked edge there. So, unsurprisingly, Canada stayed in touch with the Welsh for an hour (it was 15-3 Wales at the half) but got blown away in the last twenty minutes. It was a gutsy Canada performance. For the most part they tackled hard and tried to run what ball they had. It was a lot less negative than the Clarke/Rees era. For the Welsh it wasn't that much of a test but I thought the young winger, Czekaj, looked very promising.
