Pick passages from five of your favorite books. The first book's passage should come from the fifth page, the second from the tenth, the third from the fifteenth, the fourth from the twentieth, and the fifth from the twenty-fifth. Do not give the titles and see if your flist guesses the books.
1. In the mid-twentieth century the Turner thesis also passed out of fashion. yet another generation of American historians became deeply interested in processes of immigration and ethnic pluralism as determinants of a voluntary society. This third approach was specially attractive to scholars who were not themselves of Anglo-Saxon stock.
2. After this tirade it looks as if description of the house will have to wait until another day. I might add here that (as will already be evident) I am not a vegetarian. In fact I eat very little meat, and hold in horror the 'steak house carnivore'.But there are certain items (such as anchovy paste, liver, sausages, fish) which hold as it were strategic positions in my diet, and which i should be sorry to do without; here hedonism triumphs over a peevish baffled moral sense.
3. This old-fashioned naval affirmative, recalling so many adventure stories read as a boy, increased a sensation of going between decks in a ship. I followed the marine down flight after flight of stairs. It was like the lower depths of our own building, though more spacious, less shabby.

Two years later, on 12 May 1794, the King's messenger, two Bow Street Runners, the private secretary to the Home Secretary Dundas. and other dignitaries arrived at No. 9 Piccadilly to arrest Thomas Hardy, shoemaker, on a charge of high treason. The Hardys watched while the officers ransacked the room, broke open a bureau, rummaged among Mrs. Hardy's clothes (she was pregnant and remained in bed), filled four large silk handkerchiefs with letters and a corn-sack with pamphlets, books and manuscripts.
5. Plato was a famously careful writer. After his death a tablet was found among his possessions with the first eight words of the Republic written out in different arrangements. Socrates' carelessness here is extremely well calculated and it illustrates perfectly the problem with opson.
