6/137 in the final session put England firmly on top but there were almost as many things to worry about as to celebrate. A side that reaches 290/2 shouldn't be bowled out for 444. Right now the difference between the sides is that Vaughan made 160 and Ponting didn't. Another day the boot will be on the other foot.

Flintoff, Giles and Jones all bowled well and it's good to see Jones get the wickets he deserves and to see Giles posing a real threat. Once again Hoggard seemed to be along for the ride.

It worries me that on the second day of a test with the batting side reeling and facing the follow on that a swing bowler would be bowling to a single slip with four men back on the boundary. I understand that test cricket has changed but I also think that Vaughan continues to demonstrate a lack of aggression. I don't think the convicts will be beaten by defensive tactics.

The forecast for tomorrow is for rain but it should clear for Sunday and Monday. Will four days be enough for a result on what is still a pretty decent pitch?

The point of Hoggard escapes me. Wonderful to see Jones doing well, though - surely another difference between the sides is that the English bowling attack seems to have more depth and variation than Australia's at the moment? (Can't quite believe I have just typed that...)

I can't buy that.

If McGrath was fully fit Australia would have a genuine quick, a Stathamly niggard, the world's best wrist spinner and a left armer bowling chinamen as well as a Hoggard like "why bother" bowler. England may have the advantage in having two genuine quicks but the convicts beat them all ends up for variety.

chickenfeet2003: "giles...bowled well".
jen_c_w, nods agreements, pats the piggies that are trotting around, very much not airborne.
