When I was little, I wanted to be a...

I wanted to be a pilot until I realised that being blind as a bat was a major problem. At one time I wanted to be a chemical engineer. mercifully I avoided that fate.

At University/College, I studied...

Mathematics with a lot of probability theory and a bit of economics.

My first real job was as a...

It rather depends what you call a real job. I worked vacations as a bank clerk, a sandblaster and doing an industrial engineering project in a paint factory. After graduating I joined Unilever as a management trainee on the Technical/Manufacturing track.

I have also spent a lot of time as a...

Management consultant. I've spent twenty odd years doing functional and IT strategy, organisation and re-engineering work.

I am currently working as a...

self/unemployed management consultant.

I am happy/hideously disappointed with my career choice.

I'm not sure it was a career choice. It just happened. All in all its been pretty good to me. It's taken me all around the world and I've worked on some pretty neat stuff. That said, it's taken a toll on relationships and my mental health.

At one point I actually got sent on a five week ChemEng course at UCL by Unilever. It was only then that I realised it was, as a discipline, completely devoid of any intellectual content whatever.

Yup - pretty much like Chemistry with German. But then again, my high school had been pretty much devoid of it as well, so I didn't realise I was missing anything until, well, probably last year!!!! I'm a slow starter.... really I am!

It certainly seems you'd like some aspects of the academy. Perhaps we've all missed a great opportunity for you to din some sense into the parts that would've annoyed you. :)

Looks like my next meme -- after I get back on top of things! You know, it took me a while to realize you weren't an academic ;-)
