How high did you say? Eight feet? She's looking a big girl now!

Just wanted to offer belated congratulations on your newest addition to the family. She's gorgeous. At first I was unsure about the wisdom of your name selection, but then I realized that if she makes it to the age of seventeen, she'll be doing pretty damn well for a cat. :)

Totally unrelated but do you happen to know what M. thinks of Michael Ignatieff?

Ha, we've just been talking about Ignatieff. M thinks highly of him, and was very surprised to learn that he left Harvard to run for office. It's great that he won his seat - one ray of good cheer in a generally bleak election-scape!

I didn't realize until I read a Guardian piece last week that Ignatieff had become associated with so much controversy (due to his support of the Iraq war, various remarks he made about interrogating suspects, etc). I liked him less after reading the article, to tell the truth, but M was unperturbed - thought it was probably mostly typical Guardian spin, and that Ignatieff's remarks had probably been taken out of context.

BTW, during M's recent deportation nightmare, he emailed Ignatieff to ask if he might be able to help or offer advice. They don't know each other personally, but have postgrad students in common and know each other's work. M and I were casting nets very widely at that point, trying to find someone (anyone) who might have a clue as to how to get through to U.S. immigration. Anyway, Ignatieff had no concrete help to offer, but wrote a very friendly email back to M, which ended with a rather dramatic flourish like, "You must be present at the birth of your son. Nothing else matters." We were both touched.

She's so beautiful. :) I've wanted her since the first day that you posted her picture, but two cats - one on insulin - is enough for me right now.
