Suffering from cabin fever I ventured out into the rapidly cooling outside world today. I treated myself to a copy of the volume of the latest Penguin History of Britain dealing with the 200 years or so after 1066. I noticed that the volume on the Tudor period was written by Susan Brigden whose brother was in the same year and house as me at school. Indeed he was one of the best props I've played rugby with. No mean consideration since in my early youth I played hooker. Anyway, further indulgence presented itself and I had lunch at C'est What. This is probably the first meal I have had in a month that I haven't had to share with LJGK which was nice. The beer was good too. I also got to read the first few chapters of my book. I had no idea that the area governed by the kings of Scotland in the 11th century was so limited. Now I am being assaulted by kittens again and need a nap.

You mean the actual Macbeth period?
Remarkably limited, with genuine control extending even less far.

Have you read "King Hereafter"?

I haven't read "King Hereafter". We are talking about much the same period.

Dorothy Dunnett - fiction but backed by a heck of a lot of research - not your average historical bonkbuster.

That beats the Penguin/Pelican Tudor England volume I have which was edited by my schoolfriend Anna's grandfather*... :D

* I didn't know this when I was at school, and picked up the book recently second-hand - the author's surname gave me a substantial hint that they might be related, even before I checked.

Her volume in that series is very good. She's a good writer - good enough that I actually bought the volume when it came out!

I shall definitely look out for it. It's a small world!

Prof Brigden is always very nice when she comes into my library :-) (some of the academics can be rather stroppy)
