Its been a quiet w/e so far. Shopped at the St. Lawrence yesterday and came home with a 3kg pork roast. If you are going to do low carb do it right! It might be thought a tad excessive for two people but what the [insert favourite expletive here] I like crackling! Followed up by devising yet another movie quiz which will probably be ignored by 8/10 of the [livejournal.com profile] pubquiz crowd. presumably on the grounds that its too arty farty or something.

Went for a good run in the afternoon. It has cooled off quite a bit now and the run was really pleasant. After I got back I lifted free weights while finishing off my game of Civ III. I still haven't figured out why I suck at it when I was pretty damn good at Civs I and II. Despite the cooler weather I still sweat buckets when I exercise. I drank about 6L of water yesterday.

Beyond that, did the Torygraph crossword and read another couple of hundred pages of Civilizations and so to bed, a blinding headache, codeine and an all night snuggle kitten.

Today I shall play old farts rugby and be very good about watching other people drink beer while I can't have any.

I am playing Civ II over and over (replaying the same game from 4000 on, to see if I can improve on each score) lately. No other games on this laptop (bar solitaire/minesweeper, of course). I don't get Civ III either, so you're not alone.

As far as i can tell the only viable strategy in Civ III is conquest from thre get-go which doesn't suit my essentially peaceable instincts. In Civ II I could build up a blockbuster economy through trade which allowed me to generate an invincible technology lead and from that platform i could win any way I liked! Unfortunately Civ II is a 'Classic' app on the Mac which is a pain whereas Civ III is OSX compatible.

Yet another game I'm addicted to...

You can win Civ III by playing "Switzerland" and refusing to get into conflicts unless absolutely necessary, i.e. some nation, normally either the Germans or Russians in my case, decide to declare war.

That said, the highest level I've won on is Regent and it must be said that most of the other civilizations are far better at manouvering their armies than I am.

I can win it on Regent occasionally too but I could win Civ II consistently at Emperor level. Wars in Civ III are pretty boring. The range of tactics and strategies available are minimal and there are really stupid things like not being able to sink ships with aircraft.

You can damage ships with aircraft using the "hold down B-key whilst bombarding" cheat which also enables you to hit targets outside of the normal target range", but yes, it doesn't appear you can sink them.

I keep losing on the "allow Diplomatic victory" clause (I keep forgetting to turn it off...ahem) as hardly anyone other than myself votes for me to be UN Secretary. Bastards. Still, had mucho Schadenfreude yesterday nuking the Fr*nch so... >;-) mustn't grumble! ;-)

Playing on Deity on Civ III usually means there is only one other civ to play against. Needless to say, they tend to beat me too by building all the wonders before I get to them. Feh.

ooh poor bear. Hanging out with rugby players and no beer is hard. They'll tease you about your diet too. I tend not to tell people I'm doing low-carb. Keep a pint of diet soda in your hand or they'll fill your glass with beer when you don't expect it. Look at their beer bellies and think how svelte you're going to be :)

Oddly enough there are several of the other guys who have gone the low carb route.
