The preliminary machinations in the Liberal leadership race are not filling me with joy. In fact the oinks and snuffling around the trough are already deafening. Besides that principled bastion of privilege, Belinda (I've never met a party I shouldn't be leader of) Stronach, the latest rumoured candidates are David McGuinty, brother of the Ontario premier and yet another member of the Liberal hack McGuinty dynasty, and - God help us all - Bob Prichard, former dictator for life of the University of Toronto and now CEO of Torstar corporation where he is regarded by his senior colleagues as a complete lunatic whose idea of work/life balance is issuing class reading lists to the other members of the board and scheduling conference calls for 7am on Sunday. Mercifully, and it's about the only positive I can find, the assortment of machine politicians from the Maritimes trough seem to have withdrawn. For all his faults, Michael Ignatieff is starting to look awfully good though it would be unwise to dismiss the possibility that the Liberals are stupid and cynical enough to elect another porker lawyer from the Quebec trough.

What a bunch...eh!

I'm sorry - I momentarily read "Liberal" for "Liberal Democrat" having vivid memories of yesterday's "Bremner Bird and Fortune" in my head (which signed off with a montage of Charles Kennedy leaving his house to the tune of "Will Ye Nae Come Back Again?" and had featured the comment that Menzies Campbell had run his entire campaign on the slogan "Vote for me, I'm normal.")

Not in a three-some with rent-boys, not the sort of Lib-Dem who makes violently racist and homophobic comments while being gay and - well, Lib-Dem, not pissed out of his head 90% of the time (though having seen what crawled out of the woodwork once they'd offed Kennedy you can see why any man who had to work with that as colleagues would be driven to drink).

if only our Liberal candidates had such relatively harmless vices

So who, other than Ignatieff (who likely can't win due to his newcomer status), do you see as promising out of the as-yet-undeclareds?

I haven't seen anyone yet who shows any sign of being willing to move away from mafia/trough politics.

Is Frank McKenna waiting for the Libs to lose one more election, or does he really have no interest?

I don't know but McKenna is highly unlikely to usher in an era of open honest democracy.
