OK so there was a typo that resulted in deer/venison being omitted from the previous poll. I'm also surprised by how many people have eaten wild venison since 90% plus of what's available nowadays is farmed. So...

For "shot", read "run over by someone"...

Same here. It's either that or we get some from my sister when her husband goes hunting.

We have a freezer FULL of venison at the moment.

Exactly. In Maine roadkill venison goes to the cops, and some of it finds its way to my Dad.

In pre-vegetarian days, my then-boyfriend brought us some venison from the deer cull at the stately home where he was working. Does that count as a game farm?

I remember my mother and I struggled to find a suitable recipe, and we didn't like it much. In fact, though I said "pre-vegetarian", I was already semi-vegetarian, and it may have helped to push me a bit closer to the full-time variety. I'm afraid that young man had a talent for the wrong present.

I think culled wild game counts as wild.

OK. It was very stringy.

I grew up in rural Wisconsin. Plenty of venison about during deer season, when every other car seemed to have a buck strapped to the trunk, roof or hood. I even got shot at in the woods once by a guy who thought that I was a deer. Fortunately he was too drunk to aim properly.

Most deer in Scotland are probably best described as "semi-wild", in that they are free to roam various large estates but they are also actively managed.

The one that kept getting in my way on the golf course at West Loch Tarbet wasn't particularly well managed.

My dad and my uncle went out hunting and shot it. It was delicious. I've also eaten deer shot by various other family members. mmm.

My Dad hasn't had any luck in recent years, though. :(

I expect given I've eaten it in restaurants it's probably farmed rather than wild, but it's not been specified either way.

I admit, I like the farmed a little better ...

Checked all three (North of England) because some of it has come from slightly dubious sources (translation: non farmed, shot by someone who really did not have the right to). It's a tricky situation in the UK because everywhere belongs to somebody and the shooting rights belong to somebody who usually is, but not necessarily, the owner of the land, and there is farmed deer in addition. Whether the non farmed deer strictly count as wild I'm not certain; they definitely are according to the Reginald definition ("They said it was a tame one but it was awfully wild after the first few shots" - apologies if I have misquoted)

I ate mine (on one of the occasions; I've had it several times) pretty near the North Pole, so it may have been that its name was Rudolph.

No, but if I see it on a menu, I will be ordering it.
