I find this most interesting. It's a sponsored run for prostate cancer research. It's the first time I've seen such a thing. Cancer related events are almost always either non site specific or focussed on breast cancer. Lung and prostate cancer kill just as many people as breast cancer but get far less research funding and attention generally.

I have heard it argued that prostate cancer gets less attention, not because the medical establishment doesn't care about men, but because it is much less curable. People prefer to work cancers where their research is getting positive results, both financially and psychologically. Breast cancer (along with childhood leukaemia) can pretty much be regarded as curable these days. That makes research, and diagnosis, and publicity generally, that much more rewarding than with lung cancer, where there's very little you can do about it but irradiate and hope.

Whatever the reason may be for the bias, I am very glad to see a sponsored event for prostate cancer research, because there's no doubt the cause needs both the money and the awareness.

That may be true of the medical establishment but it isn't true of the political process. There is far more pressure applied to funders and regulators on behalf of breast cancer than any other type of cancer, not just prostate.

I saw a walk for colon cancer last year so hopefully other underfunded diseases will start getting some attention too.
