It's not much of a secret that my sympathies are left of centre. Nor is my interest in folk music particularly well hidden. So why has it taken me so long to discover Phil Ochs?

I know how you feel. This is a slightly different style but I didn't discover Elliott Smith until he was dead. And Nick Drake after that. And there are so many more now, I'm really in a big discovery phase. I think people are starting to embrace folk music as a reaction to the nausiating, torturous ass-rape that is contemporary pop/rock.

I "embraced folk music" 30 years ago but my roots are very British Isles centric in that regard,

Maybe people assumed you already knew.

BTW, I'm glad you posted this ... I got out of the habit of listening to Mike Harding when the marriage died, and I've just remembered to put him on!

Good question. But it implies that you may also be unaware of Loafer's Glory, a fascinating radio show by Utah Phillips:
http://www.utahphillips.org/loafersglory.html

It's not regularly produced now, but you can get CDs of the shows. I think you'd get a kick out of them.

KVMR, where Loafer's Glory was produced, still broadcasts quite a few folk shows:
