Zardoz redux

chickenfeetI watched Zardoz yesterday for the first time since it was on general release (1974!). I didn't remember much about it except that Beethoven's 7th featured in the soundtrack and that it was a bit strange. Still its a John Boorman flick so I thought it would be worth a look.
Its a very strange film. Sean Connery prances around in bright red underpants throughout (even, apparently, managing rape without removing them). Charlotte Rampling is the cool intellectual (except her top keeps coming off). The inhabitants of the vortex look like a mix of a Steve Bell cartoon of the Tory party conference with Night of the Living Dead goes to Woodstock. Add to this a sardonic puppet master in a giant flying head and you get the picture. Still, the DVD was C$6.99 which is almost as cheap as renting.
