chickenfeet: (death)

I thought it might help my shoulder if I went for a gentle swim. I was wrong. Breaststroke hurt. Crawl felt like someone was doing exploratory surgery without an anaesthetic. I lasted two lengths. This sucks.

Have you got any restricted movement on it - or does it just hurt to do full movement range?

There are a number of stretches and stuff you could try - but if it still hurts after all the ibuprofen and after a week of rest - I guess you are looking at the physio.

Did you put ice on it after the swimming ? You obivously aggravated it again - bah.

I've got almost full motion in it but certain combinations of movement and loading just don't work. It's rather odd.

When I damaged my shoulder (I turned over a gokart) - there were things I couldn't do - like bring my elbows together at the front of me, or do reach behind to link my hands from above & below. It was all because of two little muscles that I had torn and it took a few weeks to get back to normal - even with all the physio exercises...

Have you ever damaged your bursa? If it was a side on impact that you took at rugby - it could be that - but the Ibuprofen should take care of it.

Are any of the muscles still tender to touch?

I also found the only way to sleep was Superman style, with a pillow under my armpit.

Wish I could offer some more support - but it could just be a case of time on this, as long as you do gentle stretching (crawling your hands up the wall etc...)

I don't think there is much muscle damage because there is no obvious localised tenderness. In fact the pain tends to wander about. That coupled with the temporary loss of feeling in my fingers makes me think that something somewhere is pressing on a nerve. Fortunately I don't have a game next w/e so I've got another two weeks to get it sorted.

Former swimmer talking here: Stroke swimming is very taxing on the shoulders. Trying water therapy was a good idea, but you want to just dolphin-kick around etc. No rotating or lateral stroking for shoulder injuries. The water resistance alone will do you in:(

Rx: Ice the shoulder (no heat for a while - the swimming heated it up plenty).
