[livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta and I wandered up to check out Pride and the Dyke March yesterday. The whole event has become very large and very mainstream. The stalls that line Church Street for the event seem to have less of an 'alternative' feel every year. Big personal products and pharma companies are present together with immigration lawyers and the big banks. Major TV and radio stations are represented along with Democrats Abroad and the public sector unions. If the Catholics were there it would be all but indistinguishable from St. Patrick's Day. In many ways of course this is a good thing but it has definitely loss some edge in he process.

We hung around for the start of the Dyke March and saw the Newsgirls in full combat gear but we didn't stay long. The sun was causing the lemur to long for her crypt and I was getting increasingly nervous about my shoulder as the crowd thickened. I think I'll skip the Parade today.

Pray tell, who are the news girls - and why are they in combat gear?

They are a women's boxing club. [livejournal.com profile] mizalaina, [livejournal.com profile] tankyouverymuch and [livejournal.com profile] krustukles are all members. Besides the gloves and headgear they had a perambulating ring for the parade.

To me, the moment that really did it was when a couple years ago, there was a float advertising a rum or a vodka, while playing this (http://melted-snowball.livejournal.com/163525.html). I did briefly talk with the Democrats at Pride 2004 (mostly to tell them to put me on their mailing list and to make sure nothing had changed since I'd voted in 2002), so I don't really mind that.

Ah, well. Probably, the right thing to do is to see it with someone who's never been.
