Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] atpotch suggested that Monty Panesar is the best England spinner since, at least, John Emburey. I concur. I think we are witnessing the emergence of a potentially great spin bowler. He reminds me more of Bishen Bedi, who I did see play, than Emburey and some aspects of his bowling remind me of Cardus' description of Hedley Verity.

There are three things about Panesar that really impress me. He gets serious rotation on the ball. You can see it in flight. Few finger spinners get that much of a rip. He bowls an attacking line, around the wicket attacking on and just outside off stump, not the negative spear it into the batsman's feet from over the wicket that has become so popular. He also gives the ball air. He's not afraid to be hit over the top. With the rip he gets and the variation in flight he knows that even good batsmen can't get away with that for ever.

It's sad that there are apparently still people in the England camp who would apparently prefer to have Giles back in the side but, as [livejournal.com profile] atpotch again points out, time is not on the Wheeliebin's side. Test matches for the most part are won by bowlers who can get good batsman out on good pitches. I think Panesar is that kind of bowler.
