When I was young the Labour Party was, in principle, democratic. We even used to do quaint things like debate how the leader should be elected. Eventually, even the Conservatives decided that electing a leader was the proper thing for a modern democratic party to do. How sad then to see the carcase of the Labour Party arguing over when their Almighty Potentateā„¢ should deign to step down and hand over to his already anointed successor. Even the language used by those unhappy with the current situation oozes deference. 'Regicide' and 'treason' are not in the vocabulary of a democratic party deciding who should have the honour of leading it.

Still, perhaps it's appropriate that a party that seems to want to turn Britain into a police state should have a leadership succession process apparently borrowed from the Chinese Communist Party.

Apparently, they are, or you wouldn't be saying that! Just out of curiosity, whose words are those?

One was one of the 17 MPs who sent the letter to Blair earlier. The other was one of Blair's PR people. My source was a BBC website story that has since been replaced.
