I've just finished listening to a very good BBC production of Germinal. Now, I'm not a great novel reader. I read far more non-fiction than fiction. That said, I like Zola a lot and Germinal best of all. In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of too many novels that I admire more. I've read the novel at least twice and seen the Depardieu film several times. Now I have a good radio dramatisation to listen to. Maybe, when the TBR pile is down to somewhat more manageable proportions, I might have a crack at it in French. It's a bit long but I'd probably be OK.

Do you know if this was the BBC production they ran last autumn? I heard many episodes - not all of them (I think it was episodes, at least - spread over a week, I think) - and while bit gripped me, I did find it a bit histrionic.

I've not read the book - nor any Zola, actually.

January 2007. Three 60 minute episodes.

Must be the same one. My memory playing tricks. Autumn, January - whatever...

I think I must have missed the first episode and caught the second and third.

Oh yes, I heard at least one episode of that, I think - I missed the first one.
