chickenfeet: (cute)

Jane has developed another funny habit. In my home office the laser printer is right behind my chair. She climbs up on the printer and chirps until I lean back towards her then she climbs over my shoulder onto my chest. She'll then knead my chest for a couple of minutes before curling upin my lap. She will only do this if I'm wearing a shirt. If I'm not, she'll still climb on the printer and chirp but won't climb over onto my chest.

You mean your cats actually take care to notice if they're clawing your bare skin vs. your clothes? My cats don't seem to make the distinction.

Ah! I was trying to work out whether it was your flesh or your woolly jumpers that she respected.

My cat does. He often puts his paws on my waist if I'm standing nearby when he wants food (not the stuff in his dish, but proper food - the stuff he'll ignore once it's in his dish). If I have jeans on the claws are out but for bare skin or thin cloth the claws are retracted. He picks up on my screams of pain and is more gentle the next time I wear something similar.

The claws also stay in when babies or small children are harassing him. Young teenagers start to get claws, particularly if they play rough. Adults get claws and teeth. He's been pulled off chairs by his tail by a three year old before and done nothing but escape to safety when he was free. If I stroke him on the same chair I get four sets of claws and a mouthful of teeth embedded in my forearm.

I'm sure you already known that when you are not around she puts a lot of study time into "What can I do that is incredibly cute?"

There exist books such as "Cat cuteness for dummies" and "Dog cuteness for dummies" that are totally invisible to humans. What is otherwise extremely scary about Toby is that a lot of the cute things he does are exactly the same as Llew, his predecessor, did. If he's found Llew's copy lying around, that would explain it nicely.
