I really do use food to express affection. I went out this afternoon to get [livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta's pain medication Rx filled and grab some stuff for dinner. I was so relieved to have her home safe and sound. All the time I was thinking about special stuff she might like. I came home with two really good steaks, fresh bread, veggies, a box of Torrone and about $40 worth of cheese. I have an Epoisses, some raw milk Cantal and a chunk of Cabrales. I also have pistachios and Dutch salted liquorice. And a stack of Percocet!

I think I'd have a hard time living anywhere I couldn't buy really good food products. It's just too important. Feeding lemurs is good!

ETA: I sampled some truffled pecorino at the cheesemonger. It was fairly amazing. I think if hadn't already bought so much cheese that might have been coming home too.

Wow.

The opportunity to have Stella too is awfully tempting.

... you've never consider living in France? (Does the Lemur speak frog?)

The lemur doesn't speak French at all and to be honest mine isn't good enough to hold down a professional job where I had to work mostly in French.

Hey, I'll learn any language quickly and do my street circus act just for the privilege of eing around lots of good raw milk cheese!

Hehehe. Knew you'd see the sense of it.

(Don't they want people to be bilingual in French in Canada, anyway?)

They say they do and they give a few immigration 'brownie points' for each official language but, while new Canadians (and Canadiennes) are entitled to free English language instruction, no French language instruction is offered in Toronto. That's so unfair. I'd jump at the chance for free lessons, even though there's hardly anyone to speak to out here. Punjabi or Cantonese would be far more practical.

For some value of 'they' perhaps. The federal government is officially bilingual as are some provinces but except in New Brunswick you wouldn't notice. Quebec wants everyone to speak French but does everything possible to undermine bilingualism.

Truth to tell, outside of Quebec and a few other spots with concentrations of francophones (mostly thoroughly horrid places like Sudbury and Hearst) you won't hear much French at all. In Toronto it's way down the list after Punjabi. Tamil, Cantonese, Ukrainian, Portugese, Italian, Polish and several more.

You're a man very much after my own heart. Thankfully I'm now living with someone who appreciates food as much as I do. Off out to dinner tonight, to celebrate nothing more than his payday.
