Frustrated and frazzled
Jul. 26th, 2007 07:31 amWe had a game against the Barbarians at Fletcher's last night. The U18 boys and U19 girls were also playing and, I believe, there were a total of nine junior games at the square last night. With all the injuries and other stuff we had only eight guys dressed (Despite one guy saying he'd make up the numbers if necessary. I thought it would be smarter to let his fractured fingers heal!) so we defaulted, borrowed some guys from the Barbs and played 11 a side. We still got comprehensively stuffed. The Barbs team was enormous. I do not know where they find 15 year olds that size. We played quite well but there is only so much you can do when you are being asked to tackle an angry rhino every couple of minutes. I'm going to have to see if I can work out some sort of training drill around tackling guys twice one's size.
The other rather frazzling bit was that we only had two coaches for the two games that were played simultaneously. There is just too much for one person to do getting a team of 15 year olds organised, warmed up etc and doing all the wretched ORU paperwork, sorting things out with the ref and the opposition coach etc.
Only one injury last night; a sprained elbow. Tally after six games; one concussion, two dislocations, three fractures and a sprain.
In the small world department, I gave a lift up to the Square to one of the refs, an Australian who had been in the army. He played for an Australian Army team that was managed by my old team mate Col. Steve Salmon.
