Last night being [livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta's 20th annual 21st birthday we decided to go out. Her lemurship's choice was the Korean Grill House on Queen West, which is one of those places that has a grill in the middle of each table and they bring you stuff to cook. It was an all you can eat deal including rice and the usual Korean side dishes. We had rather dull white fish of some kind, decent salmon and squid, good chicken, pork and beef and excellent short ribs. We had to ask for liver and tongue which were included but didn't appear automatically. We split a bottle of Shoju between us as neither of us had tried it. It's basically a colourless, tasteless 20% alcohol mix of industrial chemicals. Beer next time I think.

I can see us going back. We stuffed ourselves silly on very decent food for $60 including drinks, tax and tip.

When I was in Korea in '05, I enjoyed the soju I had, but that was probably because it was part of one of the best cheap meals I've ever had (http://melted-snowball.livejournal.com/84801.html#cutid1).

Oh, I miss that place ... damn you for reminding me of all you can eat meat.

soju sounds like bai jiou, this lethal stuff somewhat like rubbing alcohol that we used to get at banquets in China. Vile. Otherwise your dinner sounds enviable!

Soju isn't distinctive enough to be vile. The sorghum based Chinese hooch OTOH is right up there with Thai whisky in the 'if I was a really desperate alcoholic I'd think twice before drinking this' stakes.

Toronto is a very good value place to eat, especially for Asian food. In general I reckon that a meal that would cost C$x in Toronto would cost BBPx in London. For the food component anyway. Booze is as expensive or maybe a little more here.
